Transference

"Right this way to level 2" The medical droid informed with quick efficiency.  She turned on her heels, and walked toward the elevator.  Phoenix, and her companion, Mika, followed.  Phoenix closed her eyes and put her hand on her chest in the elevator. An urge to hyperventilate was suppressed by Twelve.  After a breathtakingly short ride, they arrived at their destination, a sterile room with beds along the wall. "Please lay here first as we check your vital, and the condition of your cybernetics, Phoenix." The medical droid offered her hand pointing at the medi bed.

Mika slowly released her hand and gives her a nod as she walks over to the other side of the bed to wait. Even if she wanted to look around the room, her concern for Phee was greater than finding shiny things at this moment in time.

Phoenix walked toward the bed stiffly, started to move to lay down, then stopped, an almost impossible urge to flee racing through her mind. She placed a hand on the top of the bed arch, as if taking a moment to study it, but couldn’t maintain her composure. she rested her forearm on the arch, then buried her head in the crook of her arm. “Oh goddess….” she moaned plaintively.  The medical droid folded her arms and waited with programmed patience.

Mika lowered her head to peer through the opening of the bed. "Is something wrong?" She asked walking back around to the other side to see if she really needed some extra help.. if even a hand to hold on to.

Phoenix looked at her deathbed and wanted to scream. She wanted to run, tear it to pieces, anything. Anything to fight this. anything to delay it. She looked at Mika and forced a smile. “No, it’s just, um…” she laughed nervously at the absurdity of what she was going to say. She hoped to hell Mika would believe it. “Imagine if you’d been able to see the bed you’d be born in. It would be emotional, you know?” She trembled, but lowered herself onto the bed and laid back.

Mika lowered her ears at the nervous laugh. The sound of it was off and very odd for such a stressful situation. "The bed.. I was born in?" She tilted her head to the side and watches her get into the bed, stepping back and giving the comment serious thought. "I think I would be.. Yes yes.. I would. Listen Phoenix.. I'm here, don't worry.. you're not alone.. just remember."

The medical droid activated a scanner, and plugged in a universal diagnostics terminal to a dataport on Phoenix' neck.  She tapped the screen, studied the results, then checked the connection, then stepped back to check the results again.  "Phoenix, I regret to inform you that..."

Phoenix cut her off. Mika didn't need to know how bad off her brain really was. "I know. I'm attempting transference. Please establish an external data log for later analysis. I'll do the rest from here." She settled back, rolling her shoulders to get comfortable. She blinked and breathed.

Mika stares at the medical staff and holds her breath as she spoke, then looks back to Phe. "What.. I.. I see." She offered a smile, but the concern and worry showed clear on her face. "You can do it.." She whispered.

Twelve: 's voice came over an tinny backup speaker.  "External comms activated.  Mika.  Audri needs a focal point.  She must remain conscious during the procedure.  Will you hold her hands and look into her eyes?"

Mika nods tilting her head to Twelve's voice not expecting it. "Yes yes! You can count on me!" she bends down by the bed and grabs on to both her hands and smiles.. "Audri.. I'm here alright.. Look at the one with the tail." She says with a tone of optimism.

Phoenix's eyes looked fearful now, to the point of panic. She gratefully took Mika's hands and nodded, lip trembling.  Twelve's voice came again.  "Audri, begin a count backwards from 10 to 1, please."

Mika held the smile on her face, even though she was just as scared. "You're not alone.." she said out loud after nodding to Twelve's comment. "Just remember.."

Phoenix locked onto Mika’s eyes, and began to count. “Ten… nine…” The tension built in her expression as each digit passed. Time seemed to slow down. She felt as if she could see every single atom in the room. “...two…” Her eyes widened, and her mouth fell open. She gasped slightly as if she’d just seen something unexpectedly beautiful. Then her eyes closed abruptly. Her chassis felt limp. All the lights shut off, and she flopped back into the bed.

Mika nodded slowly as she counted down.. "Everything will be fine.." She said speaking pretty much out loud what she was thinking. It was the only way she could keep from panicking. The when her eyes widened and squeezes her hands and was about to tell her how it was going to be alright.. but.. nothing. Phoenix felt limp and she tugs on her arms a bit at first. "Phoenix.. A.. Audri.." She whimpered and tries to tug again. "Twelve? Wha.. what happened." Mika wasn't ready to accept the worst.

A figure suddenly appeared in the room, an imposing, tall, greying man in a lab coat.  His figure was shimmering, glowing, and translucent, and light beams traced back to an emitter on Phoenix's shoulder.  He stepped toward the bed, stood next to it, and smiled smugly.  "Well well.  It seems Project 12 has come to completion."  He turned to Mika and scowled.  "Who are you?"

Mika watched the figure and blinks at him, as he definitely wasn't real. But she shrinks back just the same.. "I.. I.. I'm Mika. What are you talking about? Who are you and what's wrong with Phoenix? You have to help her.. please?"

The figure turned to the medical tech, who seemed completely nonplussed by any of this, and nodded in greeting.  "Dr. Ceph, Miach Solutions.  We'll assume custody of the subject in one hour."  He turned to Mika, and smiled malevolently.  "Why nothing is wrong with her, my dear.  Everything is going perfectly to plan."  He reached over as if to stroke the hair on Phoenix' lifeless form.  "For centuries, it has been the goal of every cybernetics organization in the galaxy to accomplish a complete and accurate mental transference from a biological brain to an electronic one.  Years of testing, billions of credits, but not one suitable subject could be found."  He smiled.  "Until now."

Mika heart sank and it felt like a lump in her throat. Did she let her friend walk into this place and give herself over to the corporation? The ferret shakes her head to everything he said. "No no! She's not yours!" she stands up and flails at the image and grabs on to Phoenix. "Come on! Wake up, they found you and we have to get you out of here!" She tugs on her arm even though she wasn't moving. "I won't let you take Audri and Twelve away!" she almost growled the words which was uncharacteristic of her, but she was trying to protect Phoenix because she was helpless right now.

Dr. Ceph shook his head and gave a condescending laugh.  "Come now, my... bushy tailed... creature... there is no call for all of that.  This situation can be quite profitable for you if you are willing to see the opportunity for what it is.  What would it take for you to calmly walk out that door, never look back, and never mention any of this again?  Five thousand credits?  Seems only fair.  You were, after all, an important part of the process, it would seem."

Mika ears flattened down.. "You.. are going to try and pay me to leave my friend.. no.. no.. my family here?! I don't want your credits.. The cheese cake she buys for me is worth more than all the money you and your company has." She squeaked back and tries to sit on the bed and wrap her arms around Phoenix like hug. "Audri.. wake up.. I'm scared they'll take you away and there is nothing I can do.." She whispered even though she couldn't hear her.

Phoenix started to stir, a stuttering movement, repeated several times before she finally pushed through it and began moving normally again. She turned to the figure of Dr. Ceph, and smiled with triumph. Twelve’s voice came now, from Phoenix’ lips. “Command not recognized. Your attempt to steal this unit has failed. Resetting connection. Removing offending bytecode. Nice try, Dr. Ceph.”

Dr. Ceph: surged with anger.  “Twelve… but that’s…. Audri you dissembling BITCH!  You will NEVER get away with this!  I’ll..”  His form abruptly faded away as Twelve regained control of the hologram emitter.

Mika gasps and falls out of the bed on to the floor. She scrambled to her feet to say something in retaliation to the image, but he was gone. "You're alive!" She jumps back on to her whether she was prepared or not. "You did it! I.. I knew you could!" She wipes her eyes using her arm sleeve.

Phoenix moved quickly and confidently, before the medical staff had time to question what had just happened. "Come, Mika... I believe we have a party to go to." She rose from the bed, smiling brightly, and offered her hand.

Mika grabbed her hand without question, before she even asked about this so called party. "Oh.. a.. alright!"

The medical droid chose this moment to speak up "Miss, I must insist you remain for observation.  It is unclear whether the procedure was successful."

Phoenix looked over her shoulder. "I am unable to comply at this time." And continued toward the elevator.

Mika is pulled along.. quite excited.
